The Double Dummy Solver
After a session, most players carry home a hand or two that still bothers them, such as a slam nobody bid or a game that went down by a trick. The double dummy solver is the tool for those hands. It lays every card face up, works out what each side could have made, and then lets you replay the deal yourself.
What the double dummy solver does
The BridgeTricks double dummy solver takes any bridge deal and shows how many tricks each side can make in every denomination with best play from all four hands. The result is a grid with one entry for each of the four declarers in each of the five strains (notrump, ♠, ♥, ♦ and ♣). A dash means that declarer cannot take seven tricks in that strain, so every figure in the grid is one of the makeable contracts.
Double dummy means every player can see all 52 cards. The solver takes a finesse it knows will work and refuses one it knows will lose, so the grid shows what was possible on the deal. That is not always what was reasonable with the information you had at the table. Within that rule the counts are exact.
Entering a deal by hand and solving it is free, unlimited and needs no account. The solving runs in your browser. Reading the cards from a photo or from your voice costs credits, so those two options need you to be signed in. The solver is also in the BridgeTricks apps for iOS and Android.
How to use the bridge solver
- 1.Pick one of three ways to enter the deal: by hand, from a photo (Upload Image) or by voice (Speak Cards).
- 2.To enter it by hand, click a seat in the compass, then click its cards suit by suit. The quick input also takes each suit as a string of ranks, such as AKQ2.
- 3.Press Random Deal to fill any seat you leave empty. Once some cards are in, the same button reads Randomize Rest and keeps what you entered.
- 4.To read a hand record, upload a screenshot or photo of the hand diagram (JPG or PNG). Keep all four hands in the picture and the diagram near the middle, then correct any card it misread.
- 5.To speak the deal, use the microphone and call out each hand in normal bridge terms. The solver turns what you say into a complete deal.
- 6.Run the analysis to see the grid, then play the deal out card by card.
Each row of the grid is a declarer and each column a strain. If South's figure under ♠ is 10, South makes ten tricks in spades against the best defense, so 4♠ makes and 5♠ goes one down. North and South often show the same figures, but they can differ, because the opening lead comes from a different hand.
Playing the deal card by card
Once the deal is in, you can play it out with the solver beside you. It shows which cards hold the double dummy result and which ones give a trick away, so replaying the hand the way it went at the table finds the card where a trick slipped.
What it costs
- Manual entry is free and unlimited, with no account needed.
- A photo or screenshot of a hand diagram costs 2 credits.
- Voice input costs 2 credits.
Every new account gets 7 starter credits once, and they are not refilled each month. After that, credits come from a plan or from packs. Pro includes 20 credits a month for $7 a month or $60 a year, and Master includes 55 a month for $12 a month or $99 a year. Plan credits do not roll over. Credit packs never expire and come as 20 credits for 3.50, 55 for 8.50 and 120 for 17.50, in dollars or euros depending on where you are. The plans are compared on the pricing page.
What it will not do
- It gives double dummy results only. It does not work out the best play when declarer can see just dummy and the cards in hand.
- The photo reader works on hand diagrams. It does not read real playing cards laid out on a table.
- It analyzes a deal you already have. It does not bid, and there is no play against people or robots.
- It solves one fixed deal. How often a contract makes when the opponents' cards are unknown is a job for the contract success rate tool or the Bridge Lab simulator.
Common questions
Short answers to what readers ask most.
- What does a double dummy solver show?
- It shows the most tricks each declarer can take in each strain when all four players see all 52 cards and play perfectly. From the grid you can read which games and slams were makeable and compare the line you took with the best one.
- Is there a free bridge solver online with no sign-up?
- The BridgeTricks solver is free when you enter the deal by hand, with no account and no limit. Only the photo and voice options use credits, and they need you to be signed in.
- What does double dummy mean in bridge?
- Double dummy means play with every hand face up. The solver knows where every card is, so it never misguesses a finesse. Its result is what was possible on the deal, which is not always what was reasonable at the table.
- How accurate is double dummy analysis?
- The trick counts are exact. The engine searches every legal line of play, so each figure is proven rather than estimated.
- How do I enter a deal from a hand record or a screenshot?
- Upload the screenshot or a photo of the hand diagram and the solver reads all four hands for 2 credits. Check the cards before you solve and fix any it got wrong. Typing or clicking the hands in yourself is free.
- Can I play a bridge deal card by card?
- Yes. Once the deal is in, choose a contract and a declarer and play it out trick by trick. At every trick the solver marks the cards that keep the double dummy result.
Open the double dummy solver to enter a deal. To see how often a contract makes over many layouts, read the contract success rate guide and the hand simulator guide.
Enter a deal by hand, photo or voice, read the makeable contracts and play it out card by card.
